Why does an excess of empty space make us think of a vast expanse of time?

Do different places make time pass differently?

Here in the Finnish forest I think of how long ago the lake before me could have formed and how many thousands of years passed before the mosses, blueberry shrubs, birches, boulders, pines, marshes, reeds, tree stumps, branches, leaves, lichens, stones look exactly as they do now.
How much passed time do all the lakes, trees, mosses hide within them?
