Dear Mondrian

Dear Mondrian (I)
Collage: book pages, acetate
22x31cm
2012

The Dear Mondrian collage series is comprised of pages cut from a
Piet Mondrian monograph and colored acetate layered over images
of the painter’s iconic images. The acetate colours mimic Mondrian’s
red, blue and yellow while the acetate shapes challenge his rectangular
planes, establishing a playful dialogue with his visual language.
In the last years of his life, Piet Mondrian was inspired by the boogiewoogie musical genre, which is associated with dancing. This aspect of dance is echoed in the arrangement of shapes in the Dear Mondrian series. These works also investigate the media through which art is seen (in this case, book pages) and the slippage that occurs between a painting itself and its documentation.
