Photos of Florence

Ever since I first saw Gerhard Richter's overpainted photographs of Florence, I was fascinated by them. To me, hey seem to bring these questions to mind:
What is the city that lies underneath the paint like? Does the orange and red paint refer to the colours of the sky at sunset many years ago in this city? Does the red match the color of an umbrella belonging to an inhabitant of the city last April?

Do the lines follow the thoughts of someone walking on the bridge? Do the brush strokes follow the currents in the river? Do those blurs suggest the outline of a bus? Does the paint show blurred shapes from a colourful past or from a colourful future? Where is the bird whose shape can be seen soaring in the sky? Where is all that happened here many years ago? Where is all that is yet to happen?
